and the Vallejo Literacy Alliance

Greetings,

The Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum is hosting our second annual Vallejo Book Festival on Saturday August 28th from 10am-4pm. We would like your support.

We believe that children’s literacy is relevant to all aspects of society and can be addressed on many levels. Sharing the love of reading is the best gift you can give. We created this FREE children’s book giveaway event in March of 2020 which was wonderfully successful!

This year the event will take place both inside and outside. Book giveaways will be in front of the Museum on the West side of the building. On the East side of the building, there will be a full day of story readings and song, dance and performances onstage in the Museum’s parking lot.  We will once again decorate the Hall of History inside the museum with several large inflatable sculptures, including a giant green dragon, by Astro Botanicals. Masks and social distancing will be required inside the Museum.

We are committed to promoting literacy, inspiring hope and encouraging reading to all children. High quality children’s books will be selected for cultural diversity and educational integrity. The festival will provide at least one free, new book for children of all ages in an immersive, story-telling and book reading environment. New and used books will be provided by Another Chapter, Alibi Bookstore and a book drive. There will also be many lightly used books to choose from at all reading levels, including young adult and adult books.

This is the first event of its kind at the Museum since our reopening after the pandemic quarantine. The plan is to create a safe, responsible and immersive experience to stimulate imagination and curiosity about reading. We are partnering with the Vallejo Literacy Alliance which includes Natalie Kidder with Another Chapter, Maria Stats with On the Fringe Theatre, Stan Clark with Astro Botanicals, Karen Finlay of Alibi Bookshop, Trevor Allen and Jim Kern with the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, the team that made the first event possible.

We are asking for your support as an affiliate and as a participant.  We’d like you to promote the event through your networks, inviting as much participation as possible. We are planning for attendance of 200 to 500 people.

There are many ways for you to participate. You could volunteer to read a selection from a book out loud. You can give your time to promote the event, invite people or just show up and enjoy the experience. If you would like to support this cause, feel free to donate. Please contact us and we will add your name to the list of sponsors.

Thank you,

Jim Kern and Trevor Allen
